The Abako (Alliance des Baskongos) caused the 'Men from the Height' of Bangala, who had settled in Lower Congo following the movement of whites from Upper Congo or the Équateur province, to undergo a process of politcal awareness-raising. This way, they could be used in the fight for Leopoldville (Kinshasa) against the Bakongo, who claimed to be the indigenous inhabitants of the city and the area.
