There was no social security system for the indigenous workers in the colonies. In sectors in which white and black people carried out more or less the same jobs and Congolese came into contact with Europeans, this indeed caused problems. For instance, indigenous mariners and fishers were deprived of old-age pension and survivorship annuity, health insurance, unemployment pay, annual leave and child allowance.
