In January 1960, a Round Table Conference was held in Brussels. Congolese political delegations negotiated about free elections and independence. Stakes were high and to the astonishment of the Congolese, almost all of their demands were met. At the economic Round Table Conference later that year, the Congolezen did not send their political luminaries. Young, unexperienced and often freshly graduated Congolese faced crafty and experienced Belgian economic and political heavyweights at the negotiation table.
