When the Belgian state acquired a colony in 1908, a colonial authority had to be created. In order to train the civil servants to be appointed in this authority, a Colonial School was created to teach matters like "earth sciences, war institutions and administration, accountability, governmental institutions, concepts of law, hygienics, Kiswahili language and the basics of other languages of the country".
