There was a huge gap between the average annual pay of a Congolese and that of a European. Congo specialist Stengers calculated that in 1956 a Congolese averagely earned 9000 Cfr. per year, and a European 400.000 Cfr. The Congolese population hit a copper ceiling in its attempt to work its way up and was largely composed of wage-independent landowners.
